What Is MCS Certification?

MCS is the UK quality mark for small-scale renewables, including battery storage. It is not a legal requirement to install a battery, but MCS certification is how many incentives such as SEG are accessed.

MCS (the Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK's quality mark for small-scale renewable technologies. The MCS homepage describes standards for how products such as solar panels, heat pumps and battery storage should be designed and installed, plus consumer protection around certified work.

An MCS certificate is a record that an installation was commissioned by an MCS certified installer using MCS certified products (with a commissioning date after 15 July 2009). MCS is explicit that it is not a legal requirement for a system to be MCS certified. Treat that wording carefully: a domestic battery can be installed without an MCS badge, but you then lose the certification route MCS describes for quality records and for many incentives.

What it means for a home battery

Where MCS usually matters for Habo readers is eligibility for schemes that ask for an MCS (or equivalent) certificate. For the Smart Export Guarantee, GOV.UK says you must show that your installation and installer are certified through MCS or an equivalent scheme, and MCS's own SEG consumer page says SEG needs an MCS certified installer using certified products for eligible generation (solar PV, small wind or micro CHP within the size limits), plus a smart meter that records export. A battery can store solar and change how much you export, but the SEG rules attach to the generating technology, not to the battery alone.

MCS certification is also the practical badge many buyers use when vetting who will wire a pack to the consumer unit under G98 or G99 and BS 7671. The legal electrical duties sit elsewhere: domestic electrical work must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations, and notifiable work is typically self-certified by an installer registered with a Competent Person scheme (GOV.UK). MCS does not replace those duties. Habo's installer check explains how to confirm MCS scope on the Find an Installer search. Habo's offer is an electrician-wired EcoFlow STREAM from £2,499. Frequently asked questions

No. MCS says an MCS certificate is a record that an installation meets its standards, and that it is not a legal requirement for a system to be MCS certified.

For the Smart Export Guarantee, GOV.UK and MCS both say the generating installation and installer must be MCS certified (or an equivalent scheme). Battery storage alone is not a SEG-eligible generator.

Use the MCS Find an Installer search and confirm battery storage is in their certified scope. Habo's installer-check guide has a fuller checklist.
