Home Battery Storage Cost in the UK (2026)

What a home battery costs in the UK in 2026, using only prices we can source: installed vs kit, price per kWh, what is included, VAT, and what the savings are worth as an interest rate.

The short answer

Habo Energy's electrician-wired 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM is from £2,499 installed, about £500 per kWh. On Octopus Go it saves up to about £450 to £530 a year in the best case (see how we worked it out), the equivalent of a 18.1% to 21.1% simple rate on £2,499. Always check whether a price is for the kit only or fully installed. Join the waitlist.

UK home battery prices in 2026: sourced cost table

Each row below is a price stated on the linked page when we checked it on 12 October 2026. Prices change, so check the current price before you buy. We have left out prices we could not source. Compare kit and installed prices separately: a kit price does not include an electrician.

Battery Kit or installed Price Price per kWh What is included Source
Habo Energy 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM Installed from £2,499 £2,499 ÷ 5 kWh = about £500 Battery plus installation by an electrician, wired to the consumer unit (G98 / BS 7671). Not a plug-in battery. Habo Energy, checked 12 Oct 2026
EcoFlow STREAM AC 5000 Kit only £1,599 £1,599 ÷ 5 kWh = about £320, kit only Kit only, no installation. EcoFlow says that in the UK the unit must be installed by a professional installer or electrician, so add that cost. EcoFlow UK product page, checked 12 Oct 2026
EcoFlow STREAM 5000 Kit only £1,699 (sale price; £1,799 before discount, checked 12 Oct 2026) £1,699 ÷ 5 kWh = about £340, kit only (about £360 at the £1,799 regular price) Kit only, no installation. EcoFlow says that in the UK the unit must be installed by a professional installer or electrician, so add that cost. EcoFlow UK product page, checked 12 Oct 2026

For other brands, ask for a written quote that shows the total installed price and the usable capacity, then divide one by the other. Our cost per kWh guide explains how to compare any two quotes fairly.

Key point: a kit price and an installed price are not comparable. Add the electrician's cost to any kit price, and check the VAT treatment, before comparing it with an installed quote.

VAT on home batteries: installed vs kit

Direct answer

Under HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6, installed home batteries are zero-rated (0% VAT) until 31 March 2027, then 5% for installed batteries. A battery bought supply-only, without installation, is standard-rated. On £2,499, 5% would be £124.95. For more, see our guide to home battery VAT relief and incentives.

What is included in the cost?

When you compare quotes, check what each price covers.

Hardware

The battery unit itself, with its battery management system. Check the usable capacity, not just the total capacity.

Inverter

Some systems need a separate or hybrid inverter. All-in-one units have the inverter built in, which simplifies installation: EcoFlow says the STREAM host includes the battery and grid-tied inverter.

Installation

A home battery wired into your consumer unit needs a qualified electrician. Check that the quote covers the wiring, any grid notification and commissioning.

Solar battery storage system cost

A battery added to solar panels is priced the same way as one on its own: the battery, any extra hardware such as an inverter, and installation. Some solar setups need a hybrid inverter; an all-in-one battery has its own. Get a quote that shows each part, and compare the total installed price per kWh of usable capacity. Habo's 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM is £2,499 installed and can also work alongside solar, but you do not need solar panels to save money with it.

What the savings are worth as an interest rate

On Octopus Go (12M Fixed, GO-FIX-12M-26-10-14), you charge at 9.4p per kWh overnight and pay 35.3p to 39.3p per kWh at other times, depending on region (checked 15 October 2026). With an assumed 90% round-trip efficiency and one full cycle a day, a 5 kWh battery saves up to about £450 to £530 a year in the best case (see how we worked it out). Real savings will be lower.

Measure on £2,499 (best case) Figure
Yearly saving on Octopus Go up to about £450 to £530
Simple rate (yearly saving ÷ £2,499) 18.1% to 21.1%
Like-for-like annual return over EcoFlow's 10-year warranty about 12.6% to 16.5%
Payback about 4.7 to 5.5 years

The like-for-like return is lower than the simple rate because the £2,499 is spent and the battery wears out, unlike a savings balance you get back. See home battery vs savings account for the full workings.

Do you need solar panels to make a home battery worthwhile?

No. Charge the battery when electricity is cheap and use it when electricity is expensive. On a time-of-use tariff such as Octopus Go, that price gap is your saving. Habo systems use set-and-forget timer scheduling, with no solar panels required.

What affects your payback period?

Your electricity tariff

The bigger the gap between your off-peak and peak rates, the more you save per cycle. On a flat-rate tariff, a battery on its own saves nothing from tariff shifting.

Your energy usage

A battery only saves on electricity you actually use outside the cheap window. Check your bill or smart meter data; if you use less than the battery's capacity, you will save less than the best case.

Battery capacity

Too small and you still buy electricity at the higher rate; too large and you pay for capacity you do not use. See our guide to getting the right size.

Running costs and warranty

Direct answer

Beyond the electricity used to charge it, a home battery has little in the way of running costs. Warranties vary by brand, so check the number of years, any cycle limit and the capacity guaranteed at the end. Habo Energy's EcoFlow STREAM carries EcoFlow's 10-year warranty.

How to reduce the upfront cost

Install while 0% VAT applies. Installed batteries are zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%.

Choose an all-in-one system. A unit with the battery, inverter and energy management in one box has fewer parts to fit.

Get multiple quotes. Compare total installed price and price per usable kWh.

Look at finance options. See our guide to home battery finance options.

Is home battery storage worth the cost?

For a household on a time-of-use tariff that uses enough electricity outside the cheap window, it can be: the best case on Octopus Go is a 18.1% to 21.1% simple rate on £2,499. For a deeper look, see whether battery storage is worth it and our guide to home battery storage systems.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a home battery?

Check with your local authority if your home is a listed building or in a conservation area, or if you are unsure.

Will a home battery work during a power cut?

Some systems offer backup power, but not all do. If power cut protection matters to you, make sure the system you choose explicitly supports it.

Habo Energy installs a 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM all-in-one from £2,499 fully installed, electrician-wired to the consumer unit (G98 / BS 7671). Not a plug-in battery. 0% VAT. Best case up to about £450 to £530 a year on Octopus Go (full daily cycle, all used at the day rate, so real savings will be lower). Best-case payback about 4.7 to 5.5 years.
