Yes. Octopus Go has a five-hour cheap window from 00:30 to 05:30, and Intelligent Octopus Go has six hours from 23:30 to 05:30, which is usually enough for both. Ask your installer to check your supply can run the battery and an EV charger at the same time.

Do I need to change my tariff to add a home battery?

No. If you're already on Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus Flux, or any time-of-use tariff with cheap overnight rates, you're already on the right tariff. The battery simply takes advantage of the same cheap rate you're already using for your EV.

How much can an EV driver save with a home battery?

An EV driver on Octopus Go can save up to about £450 to £530 per year on household electricity by adding a 5 kWh home battery (best case, full daily cycle, real savings lower). This is on top of the savings you're already making by charging your EV overnight instead of at peak rates.

Home Battery Storage for EV Drivers

The short version: EV drivers on time-of-use tariffs are already paying 9.4p/kWh overnight. Without a battery, the rest of your home still runs at the 35.3p to 39.3p day rate. A home battery fixes that: it charges alongside your EV and powers your house when rates are high.

Why EV drivers are the perfect fit for home batteries

If you drive an EV, you've already done the hard part. You've switched to a time-of-use tariff, you've got a smart meter, and you understand how cheap overnight electricity works. Most people considering a home battery need to switch tariff first: you don't.

Right now, your EV charges at 9.4p/kWh overnight on Octopus Go. But every light, appliance, and device in your house still runs at the 35.3p to 39.3p day rate (checked 15 October 2026). That's a 26p to 30p/kWh gap you're paying for no reason.

Which EV tariffs work?

Any time-of-use tariff with cheap overnight rates works with a home battery. If you're on one of these, you're already set:

Octopus Go: 9.4p/kWh overnight (00:30 to 05:30). The most popular EV tariff and our recommended option.
Intelligent Octopus Go: 7.6p/kWh for six hours overnight (11:30pm to 5:30am, Octopus, checked 10 October 2026). Requires a compatible EV or charger.
Octopus Flux: variable rates with cheap overnight periods. Works well if you have or plan to add solar.
Economy 7: about 7 cheap overnight hours. Rates vary by supplier and region, and savings are usually lower than Octopus Go. Put your rates into the savings calculator.

Already on Intelligent Octopus Go? Your overnight rate is 7.6p/kWh for six hours from 23:30 to 05:30 (Octopus, checked 10 October 2026). Every kWh your battery shifts from your quoted day rate to that window is a saving.

What about Intelligent Octopus Go specifically?

Intelligent Octopus Go is designed for EV owners and offers some of the cheapest overnight rates available. The tariff often extends cheap-rate periods beyond the standard window to help your EV finish charging. A home battery benefits from these extended periods too: more cheap hours means a fuller battery every morning.

One thing to note: Intelligent Octopus Go requires a compatible EV or smart charger. If you're already on it, you meet the requirements. The home battery doesn't affect your eligibility.

You don't need solar

Many battery companies pitch their products alongside solar panels. If you have solar, a battery absolutely helps you store and use more of your generation. But you don't need it.

As an EV driver, you already have the tariff that makes batteries work. The battery pays for itself through tariff arbitrage alone, charging at 9.4p and displacing 35.3p to 39.3p electricity. Solar is a bonus, not a requirement.

The numbers over time

Year 1 to 6: A 5 kWh battery at £2,499 pays back in about 4.7 to 5.5 years in the best case, through savings of up to about £450 to £530 a year (one full cycle a day)
Year 6 to 10: After payback, you keep the full annual saving. Typical warranty is 10 years
Year 10+: The battery often keeps working beyond warranty, with less capacity as it ages

Over 10 years that is up to about £4,535 to £5,268 of savings against £2,499 fully installed, so up to roughly £2,036 to £2,769 net in the best case.
